Professional Goals of the Southwest Association of Nigerian Physicians
The Southwest Association of Nigerian Physicians formed in the year 2016 with the goal of creating a wholesome and compassionate group for Nigerian physicians in the southwest region of the United States. Our goals include caring for one another, clinical and career collaboration, and scholarship.
Caring for Each Other and the Community
The influx of physicians from Nigeria going to the cities of El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico was unprecedented and generated a lot of response and needs from both within and outside the Nigerian community. Many of the physicians experienced difficulties inside and outside of the professional community, and they faced these challenges regardless of age, sex, or area of specialty. In addition, moving to a place that is incredibly different than their home posed challenges for them as well, especially for the physicians’ children and spouses. Nothing prepared most of the physicians and their families for the impact of culture, education, and socialization that comes with integrating into a new society.
This quagmire birthed the need for a group that could mutually support each other emotionally, socially, and professionally. The first objective of this formation is to bring together a group of intelligent, vibrant, community-minded, and empathetic professionals who work in one of the oldest and most honorable professions. The second objective is to positively impact the community into which we have relocated and to integrate into the said community in a meaningful way, that would be mutually beneficial to both the community and to the group.
Clinical and Career Collaboration
Clinical and career collaboration has been the mainstay in most medical communities and our association is committed to upholding the same within its group and within the physician community at large.
Southwest Association of Nigerian Physicians boasts a large number of highly educated and very accomplished physicians trained in various specialties in the field of medicine. At the roots, we have the primary care physicians that bring with them extensive experience from training both in our country Nigeria, in European countries, and within the United States of America and Canada. Nigerian physicians are known for their kindness, devotion, and openness of manner to both their patients and their colleagues. The natural aptitude to embrace both the old and the young and the rich and the poor allows them to care for individuals of all backgrounds.
This eclectic group also boasts many physicians in various specialties to include but not limited to, neurologists, interventional radiologists, cardiologist, infectious diseases specialists, pain management specialists, pediatricians, and more. These form a highly energetic group of professionals who see their chosen profession as a means to contributing to the betterment of the society we live in.
